prune picker

This is the blog of a prune picker. (Native born Californian) Retired oilfield. I am an old man. I blog a lot about my body and getting old. As I approach death life gets more interesting. More interesting is not good. I still drive. I attend sports, music, and civic events. I am writing my memoirs. I attend swim class three times a week. Some of my blogs might be interesting. A lot of my blogs are silly and trivial. None are very long.

Unalaska. Admiral Byrd's lead sled dog.

I must be strange, but I find it interesting and fascinating that Unalaska, a sled dog, is buried in Monroe, Louisiana. He was born in 1923 in the Northwest Territories, Canada. He was chosen by Admiral Byrd to be the lead sled dog of the team that pulled the sled on his historic trip to the South Pole in 1929. He and other members of the expedition went on a victorious tour of the US in the winter of 1930. While in Monroe Unalaska was killed by an automobile in January, 1931.

Due to the efforts of the school children at the Georgia Tucker Elementary School, Unalaska is buried under a fine gravestone.

You can see the gravestone in front of the school.

From mushing in the snow to a hero's burial along the bayou. You never know what you are going to find  in North Louisiana!
