prune picker

This is the blog of a prune picker. (Native born Californian) Retired oilfield. I am an old man. I blog a lot about my body and getting old. As I approach death life gets more interesting. More interesting is not good. I still drive. I attend sports, music, and civic events. I am writing my memoirs. I attend swim class three times a week. Some of my blogs might be interesting. A lot of my blogs are silly and trivial. None are very long.

Pomona, California. Old pictures and Prunepicker Memories.

I am having a ball going through old pictures of Pomona and finding things that are pictures out of my pre-army life. I have previously found pictures from my junior high days.

The large mountain in the middle is Old Baldy. It was an hour or so from here to fun in the snow or the surf. I was born in 1925 in a house in an orange grove on East Kingsley Avenue. Last of nine.

I worked several years at the U and I Cafe on west second street. I washed the dishes. When I retired they had to buy a machine to replace me! The most expensive item on the menu was a complete T-bone steak dinner for forty five cents.

Fifth from the right in the next to the top row is my sweet sister Dallas. Most all of my family worked  some at the Pomona Tile, but Dallas worked there many years.

Dallas passed away recently. She was my last of my eight siblings living. I miss every one of them.

This picture has a picture of Captain Joseph Butcher.

Butch was married to my sister Jean. I can remember when they were going steady. Butch drove a bulk ice truck for years. When the Japanese were interned at the Pomona Fairgrounds, he got a job guarding them. That was the start of his law enforcement career that lasted almost forty years. At his retirement dinner he was given a congratulatory telegram from President Nixon. I was always very proud of Butch. He was a good friend and a great brother in law!
