prune picker

This is the blog of a prune picker. (Native born Californian) Retired oilfield. I am an old man. I blog a lot about my body and getting old. As I approach death life gets more interesting. More interesting is not good. I still drive. I attend sports, music, and civic events. I am writing my memoirs. I attend swim class three times a week. Some of my blogs might be interesting. A lot of my blogs are silly and trivial. None are very long.

Meals during the Great Depression.

Some of my favorite meals during the Great Depression.

Fried potato sandwich. I do not recall anything except potato on the sandwich. I liked my fried potato crispy. I guess that is why I like French fries.

Lettuce sandwich. With lots of mustard and tomatoes.

Sugar sandwich. If available a piece of bread was coated with condensed milk. A light coating of sugar was applied. Delicious.

Fried cornmeal mush.

Potato soup. Water based.

I remember salt pork at four and one half cents per pound that was used to make gravy. Good with lots of biscuits.

Fried rabbit now and then.

I was lucky that I lived in the Pomona Valley in Southern California. There were fruit orchards everywhere. Fresh fruit for desert.

  1. Hello, Mr. Monson! What a gift it was to come across your blog today. Have gone back as far as possible, to read every post. God bless you sir, and thank you for your service to our country, during WWII! RB
