prune picker

This is the blog of a prune picker. (Native born Californian) Retired oilfield. I am an old man. I blog a lot about my body and getting old. As I approach death life gets more interesting. More interesting is not good. I still drive. I attend sports, music, and civic events. I am writing my memoirs. I attend swim class three times a week. Some of my blogs might be interesting. A lot of my blogs are silly and trivial. None are very long.

Class 2. Muslims in America. 10/9/2013.

The title of the session was "American Muslims from the 19th Century to WWI". The class has gone from a lecture group to a discussion group. The tables were rearranged so that the dozen or so participants  face each other. It was interesting to see some animated discussions on areas of disagreement.

I learned that of the 2/3 million or so slaves imported to America, 1/4 to 1/2 were Muslims. There have been Muslims living and working in America for a long time.

The discussion group is sponsored by the Louisiana Endowment for the Arts and the American Library Association.
