prune picker

This is the blog of a prune picker. (Native born Californian) Retired oilfield. I am an old man. I blog a lot about my body and getting old. As I approach death life gets more interesting. More interesting is not good. I still drive. I attend sports, music, and civic events. I am writing my memoirs. I attend swim class three times a week. Some of my blogs might be interesting. A lot of my blogs are silly and trivial. None are very long.

Old Pomona Pictures. I am going to take a vacation from blogging. See you?

These pictures are from the Facebook page of Elizabeth Cole. A nice lady from Pomona. She posted therm on "Growing up in Pomona, California wasn't so bad at all." Thank you Elizabeth. I love your pictures.

I saw this scene all the time growing up in Pomona. Many depression meals from these trees.

Pomona Post Office. What model year are those cars?

Pomona Rose Bowl Float. 1938.

Center of town, Second and Gary.

New car show in front of the Fox Theatre. 1934. I was nine years old.

I plan to give up blogging for just a little while. My stuff is such a mess. I have had the sad job of cleaning up after loved ones who have passed away. It is a tough sad job. I hope to make the job easier for those that clean up after me. I can save them a lot of work by throwing out stuff myself.

  3. Mr. Monson. I stumbled across your blog last week and your stories about your life in Pomona make me feel as if I am reliving much of my parents’ life as well as sparking memories of my own. (I tried to write you before, but I do not think my post went through.)

I think you may have gone to Pomona High School with my mother, Virginia Geddes (born in Pomona in 1925) or her sister Margaret (b. 1923). Your stories mirror my mother’s (for instance she spoke often of her friend Hideo and his family being sent to the Fairgrounds during the internment of persons with Japanese ancestry - my great grandfather was a co-owner of Triangle Shoes which appears in your pics of 2nd Street) and my memories of Pomona during my childhood in the 50s and 60s are similar to yours. A wonderful place for a kid. Your photos of the area are outstanding! I also love the L.A. County fair – my mother went into labor with me while attending it in the late 40s and 46 years ago I took my future wife there on our first date. We have not missed a Fair since. And coincidentally, my father’s family lived in Oildale and Bakersfield in the 20s and 30s before settling in Buena Park.

Love your memories. Thank you for the nostalgia.

    1. Did your Mom go to Fremont Jr High? I wonder if Hideo was my friend I visited at the fairgrounds. Is the Fair still great?
