prune picker

This is the blog of a prune picker. (Native born Californian) Retired oilfield. I am an old man. I blog a lot about my body and getting old. As I approach death life gets more interesting. More interesting is not good. I still drive. I attend sports, music, and civic events. I am writing my memoirs. I attend swim class three times a week. Some of my blogs might be interesting. A lot of my blogs are silly and trivial. None are very long.

Foot Sleeves.

My ankles swell up every day. My Doctor prescribed some compression stockings. I wore them for awhile but it was a real hassle to but them on. I did not like the hassle so I went back to letting my ankles swell. The stockings had really stopped the swelling, however.

I noticed this product.

I ordered a pair. It takes all of my strength to pull them on.  (Almost a hassle) But they work.

They are getting stretched and are easier to get on. (less hassle) They look sporty!

  1. Hello, Mr. Chuck!

I just wanted to tell you that at work, we use gardening gloves that have a latex, rubbery coating on the palms and fingers to help us put on compression stockings. (like these http://www.walmart.com/ip/Midwest-Quality-Textured-Rubber-Work-Gloves/16778774 ) They really seem to make that tricky job much easier. The rubbery grip on the fingers help you to pull them on, and then, once they are on, you use the palms of the gloves to start at the toes, and sort of squeeze and "stroke" the stockings up towards the knee to smooth the wrinkled fabric out. You can buy the gloves at Lowes or Walmart for very little money. I am going to post a link to a youtube video that not only shows the gloves, but teaches you how to use them. The first time I saw someone at work use this technique, I thought it was brilliant because it uses such a common and inexpensive item to solve a problem that is such a pain in the behind! I hope this helps. Swollen feet and ankles are no joke. Please take care of yourself because you are worth the effort!

  3. Mr. Chuck,

The feeling is mutual! I am just doing my clinical fieldwork right now. I have two months at the Green Clinic Orthopedic Clinic and then two months at a Rehab/Nursing Home in El Dorado. After that I start preparing for the National Board Exam. Then I will be a certified Occupational Therapy Assistant. Then I work for 1000 hours and decide if I want to go on and get my master's degree to be an Occupational Therapist. I will have to weigh the massive student loan debt against the raise in pay, haha! I absolutely LOVE working in orthopedics. I get to be around lots of nice people and feel that I am really making a difference in their lives. It is very rewarding.
I hope that you are having a nice summer. D.B. tells me that he has bumped into you a few times out and about in Ruston lately. Maybe our paths will cross soon. I would like that.

    Love and Hugs,
    A.B.

  4. Compression sleeves and socks apply consistent pressure to the arteries of the lower leg and allow the arteries to relax during activity, which causes an increase in oxygen rich blood flow to working muscles. The graduated compression (highest pressure in the foot and decreasing in intensity towards the calf) assists the veins in pushing de-oxygenated blood back to the heart.
