Since I killed a deer last Monday I realized that I have killed five deer in my lifetime. I have never shot a deer. I went hunting several times but did not ever see a deer. I got all five of my life time deer kills with my steering wheel. One in California, one in Canada, one in Washington, and two in Louisiana.
Deer #1. In 1954 I was driving north on 101 (on the coast in California) in the Redwoods. I was on my way to a well in Petrolia to do well work for Schlumberger. Out of the woods on my right came a deer who ran into my car.
Deer #2. In 1989 Jackie and I were pulling our fifth wheel trailer in British Columbia. We were going west out of Chilliwack. A large deer came out of our left. I thought we were going to get past it but the deer hit our trailer right at our bathroom. That night in the RV park we had to use the camp bathroom.
Deer #3. In 2006 I was driving Jackie to dialysis. (trip from Chimacum to Paulsbo in Washington) We were almost to the Hood Canal Bridge. Pow! From the left a deer hit our Ford sedan and flew over our car. I had to call for another car and driver for Jackie while I went with the wrecker.
Deer #4. In 2013 I was going home from Jefferson Corner. On Simmons a deer came from the left and got me. This was the third body shop trip for my car and I soon traded it in. I hoped to have better luck with a new car.
Deer #5. In 2016 (last week) On the way to Jefferson Corner, in the pitch black at five minutes to five, a deer tore up my car. I am now driving a new Chevy rental. I did not know all the buttons in my Camry after three years so you know how I am doing in the Chevy.
That is enough deer for me. Three states and one Foreign country.
Consider...when you've been driving for 75 yrs or so, you're bound to encounter more deer than the average driver.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog, as always....thanks
