prune picker

This is the blog of a prune picker. (Native born Californian) Retired oilfield. I am an old man. I blog a lot about my body and getting old. As I approach death life gets more interesting. More interesting is not good. I still drive. I attend sports, music, and civic events. I am writing my memoirs. I attend swim class three times a week. Some of my blogs might be interesting. A lot of my blogs are silly and trivial. None are very long.

Two Birthday Apple Pies!

I had a piece at the party and took a piece home for Sunday morning breakfast. My oldest great grandson had requested apple pie for his birthday. Wasn't that sweet of him? I love apple pie.

Ethan was 14 yesterday. He ran a mile cross country (6th out of 70!), had a lobster pizza at the Red Lobster, opened presents and had apple pie mid afternoon, then a ride (with his family) to a Christian concert in Alexandra in the evening. A good day for a good guy.

Lunch at Red Lobster.

Open presents.

Good pies. One on one and 4 on the other.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ! ETHAN.

An egg in John's sweat band that he left on work bench.

I wonder if John has to leave the sweat band there from now on?

Sunday, October 12, 2014 Meeting of the Northeast Louisiana Genealogical and Historical Society.

Chuck Rand was the speaker. His subject was "The Flags of the Confederacy". Chuck is a graduate Mechanical Engineer and Historian. I thought that was an interesting combination. I am a graduate Mechanical Engineer and I have had a life long interest in history. When I was studying engineering in college one of my elective courses was "The History of Western Europe". I took it for the fun of it.

Chuck was a dynamic speaker and knew his subject cold. He had a stack of folded maps a foot high. As he unfolded them he gave a detailed history of the map.

The flag above is the battle flag of the Army of North Virginia. There were three official flags of the Confederacy. This flag is not one of them. However, today it is considered the Confederate Flag.

First Annual Dirty South Marathon. Part II. October 12, 2014.

My Prune Picker assignment. Get pictures of my friend Deena Marie Ferguson starting the race and ending the race. I had two camera batteries charged, my cell phone was charged. I was at the race site two hours early. But I failed my assignment. I was in the wrong place at the start of the race. I was out of charge at strategic times. I forgot to take my second camera battery. I could not read my iphone at the finish. I will probably lose my Prune Picker photographer position!

I did get pictures of Deena before and after the race.

Deena before the race in front of the Ike Turner Pavilion.

Two pics of Deena and her running buddies.

Willie started the race with his duck call.

The runners have a chip that logs their start and finish times.

Along the route in Old Monroe.

These men pushed their passengers all the way!

Deena is in this group approaching my spot. At the critical time my battery was dead.

Running buddies after the race.

Craig and Deena Marie Ferguson. Two important people. Craig is a English Teacher. I think teaching English is a fascinating and important occupation. I have much respect for English Teachers. Beside running marathons Deena is the Manager of my local Ruston Starbucks. She has graciously served me many cups of delicious coffee over the years, with a smile. I think that working at Starbuck is also an important occupation.

Egg Day!

Sunday, October 13, 2014 is a day that will go down in history. One of John's chicken laid an egg!

Not very big, but she is barely six months old. John brought the baby hens home June 1.

When I pulled into my parking space after swimming, several hens greeted me. I thought that they might get in the car!

Bluegrass in Arcadia. Thank you plaque for the Mayor of Arcadia.

Helen Whatley, the President of the North Louisiana Bluegrass Club showed me a plaque that will be presented to the Mayor of Arcadia. The plaque expresses the appreciation of the club for the support of the Mayor.

Helen holds the plaque.

Lots of good picking and grinning today. Saturday, October 11, 2014.

Bluegrass Country leaves the stage. I was late.

I enjoy the Back Forty. (3 pics above)

Had a birthday party!

Rhonda had a birthday today. Her husband Mike had an important job, out off town. Rhonda graciously drove out of her way on her way home after work to have her birthday supper with me. I was thrilled.

We had a nice party.

Celia, my old friend is happy.

She is also in a very pretty picture. She is on a walk in Jackson Hole, Wyoming with my grand daughter Corrie Faith Wright. Corrie has been in Hawaii for a year plus and has just been reunited with Celia. Doesn't Celia look happy?

Brother Mark Wright commented that Celia never looks at the camera. Corrie confessed that she was holding a treat over the camera. It was worth it. Isn't that a beautiful photograph? Corrie has a way with cameras and photos.

Every time I pull out a camera, Midnight, our black lab dog runs away. He can not stand to even have a camera aimed at him!

I was present when Celia came home from the kennel with Corrie and Chad in Jackson, Wyoming. Several years ago. See the gray beard? Jackson, Celia, Chad, and Corrie have a special place in my heart.

Election Signs in Ruston, Louisiana.

There are candidate signs all over town. I wonder if you can forecast the outcome of the election from studying the signs. There are areas where all candidates can install signs, but most areas require the permission of the property owner. In general the more property owners that approve of the candidate, the more signs there are for that candidate.

The first three photos are of the only electrically lighted sign.

This is the largest sign. And the only sign mounted on a trailer.

The signs are a colorful addition to the scenery of Ruston. I will miss them!
