Some thoughts on religion.

I came across the following in The True Believer by Eric Hofer.

The opposite of the religious fanatic is not the fanatical atheist but the gentle cynic who cares not whether there is a God or not. The atheist is a religious person. He believes in atheism as though it was a new religion. He is an atheist with devoutness and unction.

Interesting. This statement agrees with my thoughts on the subject. Many atheists, that I have met, are true believers. Personally I find it difficult (impossible?) to be a true believer.

  3. There can be many definitions for any philosophical position. According to yours, I would be an agnostic like yourself as I often say I'm more certain of what I don't believe than what I do. I'm not fanatical but I fear and mistrust the religious fanatic. Just look at the history of this world. Many Christians feel that any ex-believer who denies god is angry or disappointed but I came to my position through years of observation, study and the decision to trust in my own "god-given" brain. Your comments on this subject are lovely and I appreciate your thoughtfulness.
