A distant cousin, Henry William Munson, was born in Mississippi, married and lived a spell in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, and settled in Brazoria County, Texas. He was one of the hundreds of colonists that Stephan Austin recruited to settle in Texas. He named his holdings in Texas the Oakland Plantation. He had lived near the Oakland Plantation in Louisiana.
He lived an heroic life but died at 40 of yellow fever. He left a wife and eight children. His last words are reported to have been "Please educate my children". The monuments below honor his memory.
The story of his life is contained in a book titled "The Munsons of Texas".
