prune picker

This is the blog of a prune picker. (Native born Californian) Retired oilfield. I am an old man. I blog a lot about my body and getting old. As I approach death life gets more interesting. More interesting is not good. I still drive. I attend sports, music, and civic events. I am writing my memoirs. I attend swim class three times a week. Some of my blogs might be interesting. A lot of my blogs are silly and trivial. None are very long.

A mile in 23 minutes!

This morning I walked a mile in 23 minutes. Four time around the track. 2700 steps. It was about all I could do. I am sure it will get easier. The ladies in the picture did much better than that.

2011 Louisiana Tech University Senior Winter Games

Anyone who can say the name of this event without stopping to take a breathe is in good enough condition to participate. Besides lunch is being served. Wish me luck.

Silly on my lap.

Silly, one of Kerry's cats, curls up on my lap while I watch O'Reilly with John. Silly's warmth is very cozy and I look forward to it. He stays on my lap 30 to 60 minutes.

Two laps so far today.

I have been to the Jefferson Corner Liars Club for coffee, to the VFW for breakfast, and then I did two laps around the Tech track. My pedometer now reads 2,300 steps. 10,000 is a lot of steps! The most steps in a day that I have done this month is 7,400.

Squire Creek Country Club Lunch Buffet.

My thanks to Sue and Jewette Farley for hosting me and the Blakley Ladies to lunch at Squire Creek today. What is an old Prunepicker doing with all these Elegant Southern People? You can tell from the look on my face that I do not understand. Everyone else in the picture is smiling. From the right: Old Prunepicker, Mrs Rosa Blakley, Rosa's daughter Rhonda, Rosa's daughter Tina, Mrs Sue Farley and Mr Jewette Farley.

The food was delicious.

The three Blakey Ladies and I really had a great time. Thanks to Sue and Jewette.

The three Blakley Ladies run the convenience store where the Jefferson Corner Liars Club meets.

Tommy Ledford's 90th Birthday Party.

What a blowout! Half of Ruston must have been there. Tommy probably had worked on the plumbing of most of the guests in the years he was in the plumbing business. You know the old saying "once a plumber, always a plumber".

Here is a picture of Tommy sitting behind his birthday cake.

The cake was made to look like Tommy's old plumbing truck.

Notice that the license plate number is 90.

These group shots were taken early in the party. Later these spaces were full of people.

Someone had made a great slide show about Tommy's life. I was particularly interested in the several slides taken at Camp Cook, California in 1943. Tommy and I were both at Camp Cook at that time. Now we are both in Ruston, Louisiana at the same time.

I want to wish Tommy many more Happy Birthdays.

Ross Newberry plays basketball.

Ross, my great grandson who lives in West Monroe, played in a basketball game this morning. The teams are formed by boys 6 to 8 years old. I was very surprised by how well they played. Ross did good.

West Monroe does a good job on youth athletics.

Gang of Four.

These guys hang out down the street. Nice guys. They do not chase cars or bark at you. The big yellow lab  looks just like Charlie. Charlie lived next door until he died last summer. Charlie was a sweet guy and would visit me most every day.
