prune picker

This is the blog of a prune picker. (Native born Californian) Retired oilfield. I am an old man. I blog a lot about my body and getting old. As I approach death life gets more interesting. More interesting is not good. I still drive. I attend sports, music, and civic events. I am writing my memoirs. I attend swim class three times a week. Some of my blogs might be interesting. A lot of my blogs are silly and trivial. None are very long.

I love my new quilt!

A group of ladies have been making quilts for local veterans. They make a dozen each year. This is their fourth year and I am one of the lucky veterans. The ladies are part of the Hospital sponsored Senior Circle.

The Senior Circle presented the quilts yesterday afternoon at a wonderful program in front of the flag pole in front of the Hospital. Tami Davis led the program. She did a great job. She phoned me at least a dozen times during the year to check me out on the quilt program. I wish to say that I am so appreciative of her efforts, the quilters, the Hospital and the Senior Circle. I love my new quilt and snuggled under it last evening.

Twelve recipients in the front row.

The Old Prunepicker is about to cry.

The ROTC presented the colors.

Kristi Hardaway, the lady in the picture, sang the Star Spangled Banner.  She did it so good!

Tami opened the program.

Ruston Mayor Elect Ronny Walker brought remarks and a opening prayer.

Senior Circle Quilter Julie Mohr gave the history of the Quilts for Heroes program,

Julie also gave a few remarks about each veteran as they were presented their new quilts by Suzy Broussard.

The lovely lady is my daughter Kerry Adams. All photos were shot by John Adams.

Brady Dubois Hospital CEO gave some remarks. He thanked
the veterans for their service.

Quilt title block.

That is a lovely quilt. I do so appreciate it.

I told people that if I had known about the quilt I would have gone in the Army sooner.

The Monson Nose.

Have you heard of the Monson Nose? Well, I have. In my younger days at family gatherings and other times I often heard the expression "he/she sure has the Monson Nose". Here is a sketch of some nose types.

I would say that the center nose is like the Monson Nose. Almost all of my family has the Monson Nose. My daughters and great grand daughters married guys with pretty close to a Monson Nose. Therefore my grand kids and great grand kids should have a Monson Nose.

Lets study some actual Monson Noses.

My Dad with Mom and his Monson Nose.

Me and my Monson Nose about 70 years ago.

My late son, Chris, had a great Monson Nose.

My oldest grandson, Matt, and wife Janelle.

Grandson Mark. Now that is a classic Monson Nose!

Grand daughter Corrie. Don't I have a better stock photograph? You can still see the Monson Nose.

Son in Law Bob Wright. That qualifies as a Monson Nose. Maybe a little too handsome.

Top ST Sales. Valley Division. 1952.

What is this fancy pen holder on my desk?

Engraved on the side is C.E. Monson, Top ST Sales, Valley Division, 1952.

Now it comes back to me. In 1952 I was working for Schlumberger in Bakersfield, California. I was an Engineer on a well logging truck. We would run the normal electric log and then sell services like sidewall cores, dipmeters, etc. I was evidently the top runner of sidewall cores in the Valley Division (The San Joaquin Valley) in 1952, or 62 years ago.

To take sidewall cores we run a special gun into the well. There could be 30 bullets like the chrome plated bullet on my desk. The next two images show the operation and a typical gun.

The bullets were attached with wires to the gun and were recovered when the gun was pulled out of the well. We would bottle the cores. We carried a fluorescent lamp on our truck to shine on the cores. Any oil present would light up with a golden glow.

I remember on one job in the Arvin area that a core had tiny globules of mercury in the pore space.

On one series of wells we dipped the cores in paraffin. So the oil company lab would get a fresher core.

It was interesting work.

Sports! busy here again.

Sports are busy in Ruston. Thursday I attended a grand soccer game. Yesterday, Saturday, I attended a football game and a basketball game, This afternoon I am attending a volleyball game. Being a sports fan can keep you busy.

I have blogged on the Thursday soccer game. It was a  must win game we won in sudden death overtime.

We won the football game in a big way.  59 to 10. We played Western Kentucky (Bowling Green) The win makes Tech bowl eligible.

They had to run the touch down pennants many times.

Big crowd. It was homecoming.

The Saturday evening Techster basketball game was the first Tech game for our new coach. Tyler Summitt. He is not much older than his players. His Mother was a famous women's basketball coach.

Only a two tuba game. The game was only an exhibition game. Does not count.

Tyler knows how to stand like a coach.

Mr and Mrs Right Ear were at the game.

85 to 36. The Techsters looked good.
